Monstah Black presents Cotton, a performance and video.

Cotton, the video, employs images from slavery as a point of departure, modifying the images into positive iconography to inspire and empower those that suffered it's ugly legacy.

The original sound-score, an improvised vocal performance by Monstah, was created while viewing the recorded/edited images in silence. In an attempt to invoke the spirits of the victims of the slave trade, Black employs meditation to embody characterization and sentiment through abstract and guttural sounds.

"In Cotton, I take something that was originally cultivated by slaves and turn it into a conversation piece that can be seen as an eye candy, but hard to swallow.”

It provokes a needed dialogue between diverse groups of people.”
